To ensure this won't happen, even with recipients who have stupid email clients, go to Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoFormat, and uncheck the box that says to replace straight quotes with smart quotes. Then they will always appear as "quotes" under all circumstances.

On the other hand, if you prefer and enjoy using CORRECT quotations notation (as you should), don’t worry about it dumbing down your email settings.
Don’t perpetuate the continued, growing and improper use of tick marks as quotes, apostrophes and single quotes!! Fight the power!
