A backronym is some "meaning" of a term that is made up after some term has been in use, a reverse acronym as it were. Spam, a registered trademark of Hormel, and the subject of the Monty Python's Flying Circus skit, is actually believed to be an acronym for "spiced ham", and was coined by a relative of the Hormel family a long time before there was a notion of e-mail. The existence of any backronym doesn't prove anything about the term.

SPAM isn't an ackronym/backronym for anything; it is a reference to a Monty Python skit. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rappaport, Howard M Sent: Friday, August 19, 2005 2:06 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: OT Bounces was Company splitting, now what? Mnmnmnmnm a canned pork product However ... allow me to retort SPAM is a backronym of the words: Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages, or, when forums are concerned: Several Posts A Minute. So while it is backscatter, These messages are indeed Stupid Pointless and Annoying ... much like me on a Friday. I shall leave you with this piece of wisdom http://www.ebaumsworld.com/sjackson.html Pick one, any one ... they're all good. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chris Scharff Sent: Friday, August 19, 2005 2:48 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: OT Bounces was Company splitting, now what? True. It's backscatter. It's very annoying and should be avoided, but it is not spam. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ed Crowley [MVP] Posted At: Friday, August 19, 2005 1:34 PM Posted To: swynk Conversation: OT Bounces was Company splitting, now what? Subject: RE: OT Bounces was Company splitting, now what? I beg to differ on your definition of spam. Spam is a synonym for unsolicited commercial e-mail, or UCE, and her misconfigured spam filter isn't commercial in nature. For the record, she promised to me that she's adding the discussion list to her white list. I respectfully suggest that any filter that bounces anything is a spam machine. Run your filter in realtime during the smtp and reject it before you accept the message. If your machine will not do that, turn off the bays or accept and drop the message and take your lumps. When was the last time you got spam that had a real reply/from? You are bouncing spam to people that have nothing to do with it. That, using a strict defintion, makes you a spammer. I hope you don't do that with virus's also. >From the tag in the subject, I would bet you use a Barracuda...if so hit their support forums. You will see two articles about it in the forums. One under tips and tricks that I wrote, and one in the general technical that they posted when I did, basically rephrasing what I said. _________________________________________________________________ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/read/?forum=exchange To subscribe: http://e-newsletters.internet.com/discussionlists.html/ To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
