That's a good point, Steve. I have backups of my system drive but not the samples drive. That _would_ be a PITA to reinstall from DVDs. Steve also wrote: "I also rarely use convolution reverb because it gains me nothing over my favourite Wave Arts reverb which can be instantiated dozens of times with little processing hit." I've never done a comparison of convolution reverbs and algorithmic reverbs. Have you ever compared Wave Arts to any convolution reverb? If so, how did it fare? If I had a new badass computer, I'd probably just go with convolution. Nick Raspa wrote: "...a second drive is necessary if for no other reason than to house the libraries." Yes, sample companies recommend that so (I guess) you don't get a data bottleneck with system/application/sample data being accessed simultaneously. Nick also wrote: "It sounds like I should take a close look at DP before investing in Logic." I've never used Logic, but I bet it's "deep" like DP and Finale. Not something you (or maybe just me!) can master quickly. A new plug-in is now available, called "JW Plug-in Tool". It's a plug-in that doesn't help you with any specific Finale work, but it can help to be up-to-date with the different JW plug-ins. ;-) Download at: www.finaletips.nu JW Plug-in Tool keeps track of the installed/uninstalled JW freeware plug-ins (including their versions), and can also be used as a tool to set "hidden" options in some JW freeware plug-ins. It can also be set to alert (when Finale starts up) that there are updates available. For Finale 2010 and later. IMPORTANT! This plug-in requires an internet connection for its functionality. The plug-in does not send any files from your computer, but it downloads up to 3 small text files for analyzing available plug-ins, available options and latest plug-in revisions. The text files are downloaded to the temp folder and are removed after processing. The plug-in has 2 different windows: The "Manager" lists the plug-ins you have installed, and also the plug-ins you don't have installed. Version mismatches are reported. In the manager, there are also buttons to web links for download, documentation and bugs/feature requests (links to the 2 latter will be gradually worked on). The "Options" window lists the different preferences you can set to the installed plug-ins. If you don't have many plug-ins that support these preferences, the list will be very short. Here, you can also set the "JW Plug-in Tool" to scan for JW plug-in updates during the Finale startup, if you want to (the default is to not do any auto-check). The options are stored in a text file that are intended to be portable in an easily readable text file - you can copy these settings to another Finale installation (even on another platform) if you want to. It's a very nice gift (just like all of your other plug-ins) that you have given to the Finale community, and I for one am very grateful for all the hard work you've done to make these plug-ins available to us. I had successfully and easily installed Finale 2011 with Garritan sounds on the same laptop some months back from disc. The web download was strange and confusing: (1) As components of the install package were downloading, the dialogue box included strange claims of download progress like, "3,500% complete - 2 mins to go (sic)" and stayed on that for hours. After many more hours, the final dialogue box - which stated it was downloading a Finale 2012 GIF, 8,400% complete (sic) .... 5 mins remaining - froze! I Force Quit the installer but then found that a functional Finale 2012 seemed to be perfectly installed. (2) Garritan sounds don't seem to have been downloaded - in the score setup options Garritan sounds are not available. I can't find a way to engage the Garritan already installed with Fin 2011. The install was crazy, but can anyone tell me what I have to do to either activate the Garritan Aria Engine and sounds that are already installed with 2011 for Fin2012, and, if preferable, to complete the full Fin/Garritan install? I looked at the MM website download page and i couldn't see a separate Garritan install. (I did tick the option to download Garritan in the original Fin 2012 web download dialogue box). I've never had this kind of problems with 14 years of FinWin installs.
