Hi guys,
As a helper on Apple's UNIX list I regularly see suggestions that both
Xdarwin and Apple's X11 be installed on the same computer. I imagine that
most of these people don't realize that both of these packages also install
versions of X11 in /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11. If someone installed both I
would assume that the resulting installation would be a conglomerate of
items from the two packages. The last package installed would probably
overwrite most items from the previous installation so most of these
amalgams actually run.
I regularly campaign against such suggestions as I can't imagine that
problems wouldn't eventually ensue. However, I'm not expert enough to claim
this with conviction. Now a hint has surfaced at MacOSXHints that actually
suggests three such installations. I campaigned against that one as well but
I feel that I should have more knowledge if this is going to become a
pattern. If this is truly as bad an idea as I believe, could some of you
provide some details as to why and what problems one might expect from such
amalgams?
If this MacOSXHint is a good idea then you guys have wasted your efforts
in getting XFree86 to run on Panther. All you had to do was have the user
install Apple's X11 first. Of course I don't believe that but facts would go
a long way toward helping me to dispel such myths. Thanks for your help!
