I wish I could help more about this, but I want to gripe about cvs crashing on me as well. It seems to happen when I switch back and forth between cvs to fink and cvs to my other sourceforge project or else switching between "developer" cvs and anonymous cvs. My own thinking is that it has something to do with .cvspass having entries for one password, but not the other.
