Friends -
I am finishing up my work on a system-texlive package. It will also
have tetex-base-texlive and tetex-texmf-texlive packages. With these
three packages most, or at least many, packages will be able to work
with TeX Live that currently require teTeX. The current status of
various packages is shown below.

HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PARAGRAPH:

I have a question. Currently the way I have it set up is that system-
texlive adds /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/<whatever> to the PATH. It
could, instead, install symbolic links in %p/bin to each of the
executables in the actual bin directory. Which approach would be
preferable? The changed approach would fix a few of the problems
noted below:

Current package status:
The following packages all rebuild and install without error; I have
not tested them in detail (or, indeed, at all, except for the ones I
use, e.g., auctex):
   asymptote, auctex, bash-doc, bibtex2html, bibtool, chess-tex,
clhep, clhep2, eukleides, foiltex, gengen, gfont, gnucap, gnuplot,
gri, hevea, indent, latex2html, latex2rtf, lyx-qt, mathabx,
matplotlib-py, miktex-tools, octave, pdfjam, r-base, rubber, tex2im,
texmacs, winefish

The following packages need the kpathsea library, which TeX Live does
not provide:
   ec-fonts-mftraced, ipe6, lilypond, mftrace, ptexenc, and pyx-py
If someone else knows how to do kpathsea that would be great,
otherwise I'll figure it out myself and create a kpathsea package

The following packages are made obsolete by TeX Live:
   cm-super, enumitem, ifmslide, jadetex, latex-beamer, latex-figbib,
latex-make, pdfscreen, pdfslide, pdfsync, pgf, powerdot, ppower4,
prosper, tex4ht, texpower, tipa, unicode-tex, xcolor, xdvi, xetex,
xkeyval

There are a few packages that will need other fixes:
   luximono - executes %p/bin/update-map, but system-texlive adds
texlive's bin to the path, so update-map isn't there
polyxmass-doc - undefined control sequence \ding in some latex stuff
feynmf - checks for mktexlsr in %p/bin
ha-prosper - depends on prosper (>= 1.5-1) but prosper is Provided
by system-texlive
   doxygen and doxygen1.3 - depend on tetex-base (>= 2.0-1) but tetex-
base-texlive Provides tetex-base
   klatexformula - ditto
   ptex-texmf - depends on tetex-texmf (>= 3.0-1) but tetex-texmf is
Provided by tetex-texmf-texlive
   tex-guy and vflib3 - depend on tetex-dev and/or tetex-shlibs

I'm unsure of the status of lcdf-typetools -- the current package
needs kpathsea, but I think that everything it provides is provided
by TeX Live. I'm currently looking into that.

Peace
- John
