Here is the response I got from Jeremy Huddleston who does the
Xquartz releases. Note that waiting on a Xquartz release for
SL won't help since all of Xquartz's X11 files will be relocated
in /opt to allow it to survive system software updates.

ps We could take the MacPorts option and create an X11 package but
I for one don't want to be reasonable for that time sinkhole.

No, there will be no 2.4.0 for SL.

And the 2.4.1 for SL will NOT solve this problem.  The X11 updates for SL 
will be installed in a separate prefix to not conflict.  The only thing 
that will "fix" that would be a SU, but I doublt fontconfig will be 
included in a SU since it does not include critical changes.

That's what I did for MacPorts, and it made life a whole lot easier, since 
we didn't need to worry about different versions of X11 installed on 
different versions of the OS (especially wrt Tiger compatability).
