SSL was originated by Netscape Communications, and never made it
to the RFC stage with IETF (Or at least there is no reference to
a SSL RFC in the TLS draft) SSL ver. 3 is serving as the basis
for the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol proposals in the
IETF security group, currently in the draft stage. Can't help
you with FTPS
