First thing, first.
You DONT want to telnet form the outside of the firewall to the inside.
Telnet uses no crypt and no buffer. Every letter, digit, is clearly
transmitted. Acctually, you dont ever wanna use telnet.
Any one can be sniffing the net or putting up a listener to your network
device.
Try taking a look at SSH. ( Secure SHell )
start at www.ssh.org ( UNIX )
or search the net for Tera Term, for use in windows ( and the ssh
extention )

Depending on you firewall, different vendors has different ideas.
But, it is almost always possible to redirect telnet to go over a
web proxy, BUT ( bigg BUT ) then you dont have use for a firewall!

Your other problem, connecting to a UNIX server, check if th UNIX server
is running a process called sshd. ( ask the admin if needed )
Check the version ( ssh-1 or ssh-2 ) download the compatible version,
either binarys from www.ssh.org or search the net for Tera Term ( and ssh
extentions ). BUT now where are back, you do NOT want to telnet over the
firewall.

Kerberos, ( might be misspelled ) is another nice encrypted "telnet" like
thing. Even works with NT.

Like you can browse a ftp site on the net, you can browse a local. If you
gon an ftpserver running, then its no problem. (the most common problem)

Nr.2 Depending in you intranet structure, samba, nis, Novel Netware,
"pure" NT. There are a lot of different ways to browse someone elses
harddrive.

Basiclly, its like this. You can always browse you own harddrive ( your
browser reads your cache. Try putting in about:mozilla or about:blank or
about:version or something else in the adressline. ( of course
"about:mozilla" is in Netscape))
and if you go an shared hard drive every one else can read it and browse
it as their own.

( been there, done that, when is the next "secure" net coming up? )
