Also, "IDS" covers a lot of ground, from vulnerability scanners to 
monitors, from system-based to network-based. The area covered is actually 
very broad, and all areas have products and (may) provide useful 
information and take useful action.

I know that there is an IDS consortium and a (rather large) white paper
