PCWeek just had a decent article about security. A firewall machine should be
spec'd depending on the amount of traffic. Firewalls inspect each packet and
apply the inspection to a ruleset. If you have a lot of traffic, that could
quickly bog down a machine.

Subject: Machine specs for a Firewall

Hi All,

We need a firewall (Free Software) for our network,
which looks a bit like the below sketch.

                    ^
                    | Presently 64 KB line expected to be upgraded
                    ^ later
                    |
                  Router
                Cisco 1605
                | |
            [Socks5] ------------Internal Network
         On Linux/OpenBSD
                |
                |
                | DMZ
        ---------------------------------------
       | | |
[4 Mail Server] [3 WEB Server] [DNS Servers]
      Linux/qmail 1 NT /2 Linux BSDI

Our Problem is at the moment,
how much computer power will we require for the Firewall machine

Recomended Ram, Processor speed, etc.

We presently have a Pentium 133 with 32MB Ram.
2 Pci 10Mbps Lan cards
But we do not want it to behave as a bottle neck to our network

Please recomend us any sites where we can learn more.

Jacob
