Subnet range depends on subnet mask. This could be a 255.255.255.252 (30 bit
subnet mask), making the subnet range from 172.16.1.0-172.16.1.3. This gives
only 2 "usable IP's," but is perfect for a two host(one host, one router,
etc) subnet, or joining two routers together, or blah, blah, blah.

Sometimes it is easier for "humans" to work with a full class c
(255.255.255.0) subnet masks, so we tend to use them more frequently than we
probably should. <wasteful humans, anyway ;-) >
