That's what they call "remote sensing"  ;-)  - a prominent and
fast-developing topic in today's GIS world.
Anyhow, I talked to a person who was involved in producing the 1990
version of CORINE and as far as I can tell there still was a lot of
traditional, manual map-making work involved ....
