Following up to myself... I brought my laptop up to date:
FreeBSD 4.6-RC #1: Mon Jun 3 21:48:05 PDT 2002 i386 pcm0: <CS461x PCM Audio> on csa0 No problems. Sound is just fine. The problem seems to be limited to the cmi driver.
