I know it's complicated and poorly documented, but there *are*
examples which are included with the server, and those examples *do*
work. Once you changed your configuration to follow the examples, it
did what you wanted.

Your previous efforts were in the spirit of trying to configure the
server based on how you thought it worked, and not based on following
the given examples. As such, you were frustrated when it "didn't
work", as your expectations were misleading you.

It may seem like cut & paste to you as you are very familiar with the inner workings. However, for those of us who are switching from other servers (Cistron in this case) it is not any way, shape, or form obvious. The comments in the config files are almost identical to those in the Cistron config files. There are some significant changes that make the switch very difficult. Not the least of which is that exec-programs have to return pairs with a comma at the end of all but the last. That only appears in the sample in the scripts directory and even then is very difficult to notice. The examples may work, but they don't really give much help in figuring out what they are doing or how to adapt them. For example, the documentation in the radiusd.conf file for rlm_exec seems to indicate that the rlm_exec module will be applied to all authentication transactions. There is no clue about how to have multiple such modules or to only apply them to specific groups of users.
