That's a bug :) The autocolor plugin should run at any point when the Freevo OSD is hidden, so if it's not showing at a certain point, it's broken :)
The mplayer TV plugin hasn't been updated to use the new childapp stuff in CVS yet, so that might be the problem. I know it's probably not that much of a help, but I'm sure it'll be ported soon... I don't want to backport the changes since the old stuff will be going away, and it would be a bit of a waste if you've got an acceptable workaround for now.
