Rob,
I agree that Brantley should be OK, but to be fair, the college game, especially in the SEC is much faster than the high school game. It may be that his game is better suited for the Big 10. I think he can succeed in the SEC but could easily be wrong. We all remember what a shock it was to an All-American QB for Ohio State to find two Gator Defensive Ends hanging onto him the whole National Championship game. I think you've pretty much nailed it, Ken. There's no way the former HS national player of the year just lost the tools and forgot how to play. Brantley really was in a no-win situation this year and he could come back and surprise us under the new system. I'm not sure how likely it is, because I think it's really difficult to come back mentally and regain the type of uber-confidence you need to be a great QB once you've lost it. If the old staff were staying, I'd say there'd be no chance, but with a new pro-style offense, and as experienced a QB coach as Weiss, it's possible. He's a great kid, and if he stays, I hope he does turn it around. Brantley has the skill set, the problem this year was mental. We have seen him make throws before, even this year at times he looked good. I think his problems stemmed from a variety of sources: - bad o-line play - from the bad snaps to generally scrambling for his life he never got confidence sitting in the pocket. - poor playcalling - knowing that we didn't have a real threat at QB to run and knowing we had a mish-mash Oline due to injuries, we still ran the same offense as we did last year. -bad team chemistry between upperclassmen and freshmen - to offset the poor playcalling, the coaches then let a couple of freshmen QBs take snaps and they have success running the spread. I think this increased tension on the team - fan criticism - I realize he probably doesn't obsess as much as we do, but he had to hear it. That had to be hard since this is his dream. I think all of this led to a kid that by the end of the year was scared to make a mistake, and that is when you usually make them. He would check down to his safe pass almost immediately, I think by the end of the year, the only way Johnny would thrown the ball deep is if the WR was uncovered at the line. The big question is, will he be able to regain his confidence and gain the trust of his underclassmen teammates. We have the talent on the roster to be good next year, what we need is to get all those names to become a team. Coach Dawg has his work cut out for him. Can given his pedigree will Brantley become a serviceable SEC QB or better or will he even be the QB if Jeff Driskell is all that he's supposed to be ?? Both were Gatorade Player of the Year, both were 5-star recruits, etc. Remember, Tom Brady, Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen were coached by Weis.
