I have no idea really, but you might learn something by looking at the event stream. Run xwininfo to determine the window ID of the drawing area, then run xev -ID (with the window id) to see the event stream. On an unrelated note, I seem to have stopped receiving messages from the geda mailing list although I did nothing to unsubscribe or block them.
