I've done a 9x11 array of LEDs. Still, EACH LED MUST BE CURRENT LIMITED. In my case, I had 11 strings of 9 LEDs in series, each with a current limiter (i.e. 11 limiters). If one LED blows, 9 stop working, but there's no way a bad LED can change the current in *any* LED.
