As a workaround, try disabling the icon cache update process. I'm not sure the most concise way of doing that though. Hack a makefile? Perhaps you can override the make variable ICON_THEME_INSTALLER to /bin/true or something. make ICON_THEME_INSTALLER=/bin/true install Or something like that.. Alternatively, figure out why the icon cache isn't relevant on your platform. Doesn't GTK want it? Actually, on my system, that file is /usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache (No "." in front of the name).
