There was a whole bunch of stuff that got upgraded at the same time. I use nvidia-1.0.4191-r1 and XFree-4.2.99.4 ... baselayout changed about the same time. I didn't know where to look to discover why mozilla segfaulted and X response was so slow. It turned out to be a font problem. /etc/fonts/fonts.conf used to work OK but now it seems to need to have font directories listed that have no subdirectories, so <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir> is not good enough any more.
