Sometimes high bit characters (the garbage) can do strange things with
your terminals.  Probably best to go in to /etc and do a 
cp /etc/sound/events/._cfg0000_mailcheck.soundlist 
/etc/sound/events/mailcheck.soundlist 

after checking to make sure there aren't any changes you've made in
/etc/sound/events/mailcheck.soundlist first! (doubtful)
