I guess I didn't have the right chipset compiled into the kernel, so I checked the dmesg and I found this: VP_IDE detected chipset, but driver not compled in!
Then someone told me to go to [in the kernel config] ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support>IDE,ATA and ATAPI Block devices and to enable VIA82CXXX chipset support (I have no clue how they knew that I needed VIA...)
The VP_IDE you mentioned above, stands for VIA Pro IDE.
The kernel really could do with some more meaningful text here and there ;)
