I certainly can understand not wanting to do that. I just did it.
Actually, my 2.4.20-r7 kernel I'm using right now was compiled using
some version of gcc33, so I know it can be done.

I must have guessed wrong. I was assuming that you did not change the
/usr/src/linux link to the gaming kernel? I've never heard of that
making a difference though.

Wish I had more ideas for you. I looked in Bugzilla, but othing popped
out at me...
