For sure it's not driver problem ... I use Radeon 7500 (chip RV200 QW) 64MB DDRAM in DRI mode on more Linux PC's without any problem
I'll second. Radeon 7500 (mobility, even) running with dri, and not a single problem (unless you count framerates :).
