Hmmm, I don't think you want to be running twm.  Do you have an 
/etc/X11/Sessions/kde-3.1.4 file?

The following extract from the Gentoo Linux Desktop Configuration Guide 
may help:

Code listing 3.7: /etc/rc.conf -- setting DISPLAYMANAGER
# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm ]
DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm

Now we just need to make sure that the xdm start-up script is read when 
booting.

# rc-update add xdm default

Reboot, and see if X/KDE comes up!
