Rick, I have sort of different needs since I'm doing audio recording under Linux and wanted a really minimal running-process count. fluxbox has worked well for me. I do, at time, miss being able to drop a shortcut on my desktop like Windows and KDE. I haven't used Gnome in a couple of years now so I cannot comment on that.
