There is another very sane option... switch to IMAP, keep all the mail on the server. :-)
I'm guessing the OP uses a regular ISP like most people. I'm pretty sure we can't get them to switch to IMAP for e-mail... :-) Yes, I understand that it's possible to setup a personal IMAP server that fetches your mail from your ISP and then access it via IMAP, but that's more work than many people want to get into.
