I'm a bit lost with Python 2.3. I tried emerging it, and stuff (e.g. emerge) broke (see http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33147 )
While trying to resolve this, I found a bug called "python-updater buggered" http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32374 which includes a comment "if you are trying python2.3, it is recommended that you unmask portage-2.0.49-r16"
However, in 'package-mask', I see:
# <carpaski@@gentoo.org> (8 Oct 2003) # python-2.2 python-2.3 integration ebuild >=sys-apps/portage-2.0.49-r16 =sys-apps/portage-2.0.49-r14
i.e. it looks like r16 is masked specifically because of some python-2.3 issue.
If someone could tell me what the status quo is with Python 2.3 and Gentoo at the moment, or if you know where I should look, I would really appreciate it.
