look thro'  /var/log/emerge.log ,
which lists everything you have emerged, incl dependencies.
it will show what was emerged for Gnome, which you can remove,
then you can check via 'emerge -p packagename'
to see whether any subsequent emerges used any of the dependences,
when you can re-emerge them as still needed.
