I used to use one of those. When you modprobe es1371 you have to give option joystick=true (something like that anyway).
I tried passing a number of different 'joystick=' parameters to 'modprobe es1371'. Each time it gave me an error about 'joystick' not being an accepted parameter. I took a look in es1371.c and it does not accept a 'joystick' parameter. BTW, I'm running vanilla 2.6.1.
