visibility: false? But do you actually see the base layer on the map, or
just "missing image" placeholders? What options are you setting on the
map (projection, extent, ecc...)?

May be, since it's a cached layer (judging from the /geowebcache path in
the URL).
To use Open Street Map, just create a OpenLayers.Layer.OSM layer (see
here and here).

By the way, what version of OpenLayers are you using?

Last but not least: if you open up Chrome's Dev Tools, do you see any
error in the Console?

Also, remember to hit the "Reply all" button, or other people will not
be able to join the conversation.
