Forgot to address this one.
I find it suprising that 3D reprojection works indeed. Afaik to do it one
needs proper support
for vertical CRSs, which is contained in referencing3D. I though that
module was not complete,
have you looked into it and found otherwise?
How are you going to handle the difference between full 3D and compund CRS?
In the
EPSG database there is a lot of the latter type, a 3D system actually made
of a 2D one
in combination with a vertical CRS.
Also, what are the implication for the uniformity of the library, as said
before the
current geometry reprojection engine treats the 3rd coordinate as something
that
is going to be passed by.
You say this is another proposal, however the fact that 3D referencing
actually works
or not has consequences on the whether the decision to use the dimension of
the
CRS as the marker for 3D data is going to work or not in the long run.
Take also into consideration the data sources, that has implication as well.
In PostGIS you can declare a 2D CRS and then specify the number of
dimensions
is 3 or 4, that's perfectly fine with the database, and I guess we should
be able to
support 3D bboxes against that case too. How is that going to play if the
plan
is to only use the CRS to figure out the dimensions?
Would having some information in the GeometryDescriptor user
data section that provides the true dimension regardless of the chosen CRS
work better in general?
Cheers
