Thanks, everyone, for your help.

Here's a quick summary:

-The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES -- http:// nces.ed.gov) focuses on primary/secondary school data.

- The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS -- http:// nces.ed.gov/ipeds/), as the name suggests, focuses on Colleges and Universities.

- The IPEDS Dataset Cutting Tool (DCT -- http://nces.ed.gov/ipedspas/ dct/download/index.asp?Year=2004&Survey=1 ) allows you to download college data in a CSV file containing addresses but not geographic points. The first file listed (hd2004) is the link Martin provided below. 6,917 rows, including the header.

- The file doesn't contain any licensing / fair use information. I sent off a quick email to the site admin. Does anyone have a quick link to a text file or web page? Given the .gov domain, I'm assuming that this is licensed similarly to Census, USGS, NASA, etc. data.

- I also asked the site admin if there is a download anywhere that contains the spatial data. Elsewhere on the site, you can search for colleges within X miles radius of a zipcode, so I assume that there is spatial data hanging out somewhere. Whether it is a quick download away is another question.

- Barring a simple hyperlink appearing magically with spatial data included, my plan is to write a quick script that will walk the file and geocode each row using http://geocoder.us. My final question to the site admin was whether I could repost the csv and shapefile with the newly added spatial data at http://www.mapmap.org . (Or better yet, send it back to them to host...)

I'll keep the list posted with the results. Thanks again for your help. You're the wankiest. (grin)

P.S. The Robot Vegetable gets points for having a cool email handle and trying to post a MS Excel spreadsheet twice, but it got munged both times.

This looks like it is just Elementary & Secondary schools - and
doesn't contain Universities/Colleges?
