I looked around, and finally found an article where they actually
checked on reliability of web servers. This was done in Germany,
using the 100 most heavily used German web servers. I got the reference
from Linux Today, April 10, 2000. The original article was in
C't online zine, part of Heise online. The URL is:

Highlights:
"...first surprise. Only ten of the servers use NT, more than half use
Sun's Solaris (58), and 29 use the Open Source system Linux."
"Testing was carried out from a Linux machine ... which was up
for the entire 32 days without a single failure."
During the 32 days, NT servers were down an average of
nearly 15 hours (1.5%).
Linux servers were down 4 hours (0.5%).
Solaris servers had an average of 2.5 hours (0.3%).
"When only looking only at one-server web server sites,
Solaris results are the same, NT improves only slightly
but Linux servers have an average down time of only 80
minutes... This makes Linux servers more than ten times
as reliable as their NT competitors."
