Crimes of Passion: When desire turns deadly
What drove navyman Capt Emile Jerome to fly all the way from Cochin to Mumbai
in a late night flight only to throw his fledgling career away with each thrust
of the knife into the hapless TV executive Neeraj Grover? Did Goa beach shack
bartender Samson D’Souza really murder British teenager Scarlett Keeling who he
was last seen getting cosy with on the sands of Goa’s Anjuna beach? Why did
Santosh Singh bludgeon to death the hip and attractive Priyadarshini Mattoo
whom he had declared his undying love for?

Gerard de Souza, a journalist by profession, with an eye for details and a
meticulous commitment to the ‘facts’ of each case, recounts each ‘crime’ in
this blow by blow account of eleven stories written in the plain-speaking
language of a journalist. The stories have been put together digging through
court records, newspaper reports and speaking to those connected to the crime.

Love, lust, obsession and passion, a heady mix come to a boil in this brisk
book about the lives, loves and loss of eleven crimes of passion’ some of which
earned headlines while others lay buried in the inside pages of local
newspapers, their victims undeserving of primetime space.

Gerard de Souza is a journalist working as the Goa Correspondent for Hindustan
Times. He has been a journalist for the last 16 years editing and reporting on
a wide range of issues including politics, the environment as well as crime,
trials and punishment. His reporting on the death of British teenager Scarlett
Keeling and the subsequent trial of the alleged drug dealer and shack bartender
who were both accused of conspiring to murder her has earned him the state
award by the Goa Union of Journalists. When not writing and reporting, he is
busy fishing for clams, hunting for the best cashew feni (or urrak) or tending
to his mango orchard.

Nicole Suares is a writer, content marketing strategist, and founder of Content
Life Media. She has worked with major names in media, travel, and hospitality
like Goa Tourism, Times of India, Navhind Times, Planet Goa, Aguad, and many
more. Over her decade-long experience in media and communications, she launched
numerous lifestyle magazines like Timeline Goa and has written extensively on
the culture and heritage of Goa. She regularly contributes to the Gomantak
Times online and Free Press Journal, Mumbai. Her photo stories have bagged
numerous prizes and been published in the media. She loves reading, traveling,
and promoting local talent. She is also an active digital storyteller on
Instagram, where she shares her love for Goa with the world.
