GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 20 Dec 2003 CHILDREN STEAL THE SHOW: Children stole the show at the alternative Mukti Din Lok Utsav at the Municipal Garden, where the theme was "Another World, Another Goa is Possible". At the NGO show hosted by World Social Forum, grass-root level people could participate and relate to the whole affair. The marginalized people-slum and street children, disabled ones, migrant workers, factory workers, farmers affected by mining problems rubbed shoulders with social activists and NGO leaders from different fields. The celebrations provided an opportunity for various NGOs to convey several messages or impart advice about children's problems, AIDS, health problems, smoking or simply their work. (GT) SHEKHAWAT TAKES A DIG AT FREEDOM FIGHTERS: A freedom fighter does not require recognition either from people or government for their contribution to the freedom struggle. Self-recognition of one's own role in the freedom movement or the voice of one's conscience about the sacrifices made, is the best honour any freedom fighter can expect, said Vice President of India Bhairon Singh Shekhawat while acknowledging the contribution of freedom fighters in Goa and from the other states for the Liberation of Goa in 1961. He was addressing a gathering at Azad Maidan in Panaji on the occasion of the felicitation of 155 freedom fighters 15 states for their contribution to Goa's Liberation movement, organised by the State government on December 19. (H) GOING BEYOND JUST COMPUTERS: Goa has lost out to even latecomer states like Kerala in the race to become an IT-destination and headline-maker on the infotech front. The lesson we need to learn is that mere tokenism or populism is far from enough. Providing computers is fine; but a lot more needs to be done. The creative energies of our students and teachers need to be adequately tapped, if they are to make optimum use of this new technology. We need to learn from across the globe how IT is being creatively deployed in the classroom. (Edit in Herald) SMART AND BEAUTIFUL STRAYS: Of late, in Goa a lot of concern is being shown towards man's best friend--the dog--and dog shows are being organised from time to time. However, as Dr Gustavo Pinto says, the dog show organised by the International Animal Rescue (IAR) in Assagao on December 19 "was very special in the sense that various breeds of pets brought for the event, were from the stray dogs and pups, which people had taken from the IAR for adoption." Those who know the high standards of the foreign publishing companies and especially the technical book producers, Dr Barad's achievement of three books in succession and a fourth one in the pipeline would seem a miracle, because no Goan scientist has got such a honour in such a short time at such an age. Dr Barad is in his late forties. Validation in pharma industry is a highly specialised area and it involves men, materials and machinery. For the past five years Dr Barad is actively involved in offering consultancy to pharmaceutical industries world wide.
