Kashinath Jalmi passes away

PONDA: Former Opposition leader and minister Dr Kashinath Jalmi breathed his last at GMC Hospital in Bambolim on Sunday.

He was 62 and is survived by his wife and a son. The three-time MLA, who was also the law minister, was admitted in GMC last Saturday after he suffered a heart attack. He was reported to be critically ill and was put on ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit.

His mortal remains were taken to his residence at Khandola-Marcel on Sunday evening and people from all walks of life thronged to his residence to pay their respects. The final rites will be held in Marcel on Monday.

Dr Jalmi was first elected to the State Assembly in 1984 from Cumbharjua constituency and from Priol constituency in 1989 and 1994. He has also served as the sarpanch of the Tiverem Orgao Panchayat.

Mourning the sad demise of Dr Jalmi, Minister for Cooperation and Priol MLA Deepak Dhavlikar said: “Dr Jalmi was a very good politician and had worked hard for the MGP”.

“He was a very good friend of mine who helped me a lot when I contested from Priol constituency. I feel it was due to his efforts, I got elected from Priol in 2007. It will be difficult to forget Dr Jalmi who took efforts in strengthening MGP. I mourn his sad demise and pray to Almighty to give strength to his family to overcome his death”, said Dhavlikar.

Former chief minister Ravi Naik said: “I have lost a good friend and a legislator. He fought for the poor section of the society. May his soul rest in peace and my sympathy to his family”.

United Tribal Association’s Alliance Convenor Govind Gaude said Dr Kashinath Jalmi was the hero of the ST community. “He tirelessly worked to get the status of ST for Gawda, Kunbi and Velip community. He even went to Delhi to correct some technical issue and got it done at the Centre”.

“His death is a huge loss to the ST community. He was a thinker, a good legislator and a good human being. He had devoted his life to the people. He was the founder member of the Gomant Gaud Maratha Samaj. May his soul rest in peace and pray to Almighty to give strength to his family”.
