Sorry, I am still struggling to visualise what you are trying to do. So the user is looking at a custom map, which is actually a picture of a mountain. There's a button to 'select'. Okay so far !!
When the user presses the button, some script will make a 'selection'. That's the bit I don't understand ... do you mean that it will capture a reference or pointer to the "view" that the user currently has? (assuming the user is free to pan and zoom before pressing the button) I don't think it can be that because you said it wasn't rectangular. Do you mean it captures the coordinates of the centre of the current view? I first read that you didn't want the user to be involved in this selection, but perhaps you do ... do want them to drag a box or click a spot on the mountain image? > I need only a coloured selection. Nothing more (for now, i think).
