It is abundantly clear from the diagrams that many of these styles [if not
all] were draped from a rectangle of fabric. The pulling up and pleating up gets crazy when laid out flat.
I think most of them were originally draped from rectangles, and that's what the period instructions included in the dressmaking manual in Volume 2 tell people to do. But some of them look like the starting point was an extra-large skirt.
