Hmmm. It's certainly popular, but I wouldn't go as far as "de facto". I
think it's over-hyped and over-priced.
The SM58 is a great live mic, but there are much better options for
studio work. Even a cheap condenser mic would probably be a better bet
than the SM58 for studio-type recording, which has too small a sweet
spot and needs too much gain to drive for my taste.
Sean, I use an AKG C300 on the Ubuntu Podcast these days which is great.
Studiospares do an S1000 which I have also used. It's OK and is fairly
cheap. Both of these (and most condenser mics) need phantom power, so
you'll need either a mixer which can provide it or an injector.
