Try: The Zionist Idea edited by Arthur Hertzberg. It is a paperback collection of the writings of the leading thinkers in the Zionist movement: Herzel, Kaplan, Jabotinsky, Buber, Ben-Gurion - they are all included in this classic. The roots of many issues in modern Israeli society are all explored in this collection.
For kids I highly recommend Zayda Was a Cowboy. The story of a young man who travels from the shtetl to Texas, Zayda is an engaging adventure that is a quick read and lends itself to discussion. Ages 8 and up.
