This past summer I taught a course in library marketing and public relations. I am thinking of turning the lectures into articles or even a book. One of the major points I make is that marketing is essential. There is always competition for funding. No library is without a struggle for funds. In a city, synagogue, school or university all departments need money. We have to promote ourselves and that is hard. For almost 10 years I have been writing a column largely aimed at the general public to show the expertise of librarians. Some people still don't "get" the message.
