Telushkin's "Jewish Literacy" is superb - it covers all the bases
articulately and authoritively.

It is well laid out, so that you can read a single entry or an entire
section, and I have dipped into it frequently - for reference or interest.

I am now using it to make sure my about-to-be barmitzvah son has the
beginnings of knowledge about the most important aspects of Judaism.
