Greetings,

As I am sure most of you are suffering the same plight of economic
cut backs and closures, I would like any information or suggestions
about what you are doing about it. I would like to say that this is
not just our department. Everyone is pitching in to save and help in
any way possible.

We are looking at the fact that we may have to abandon our service
contract with our computer library system provider. I need
information on how to back up the system and export data to another
system. We have Winnebago and use the Weine system. We can not afford
to purchase another system or really afford to keep up the service
contract we have on this one, even with the discount we receive for
being a member of this organization. In addition, the company who
does the service contract, although they have been kind in helping
with repairs, is kinda annoyed with the fact that we continue to use
a dinosaur program.

Also, Winnebago is chugging alone fine since it was repaired after a
nasty power outage that shocked it out of order and we plan to keep
using it, until the wheels fall off. We have an emergency plan that I
would continue to classify new books and put them on the shelves for
lending, we would mark them with an sticker on the binder for when we
could afford a new system. We would go back to keeping track of
library items manually, using excel instead of paper for tracking,
lending and classifying.

Our biggest problem is how to preserve and keep the Winnebago data
safe, if we do have to abandon it and need to be able to use it
later. Out IT specialist backs up the program on a regular weekly
basis. We actually just switched from a zip drive to a flash drive.

What are other organizations considering? Any suggestions or help
would be greatly appreciated.
