Milligan's Trichrome is reputed to be excellent. I have not used it but colleagues have. Milligan, M. "A trichrome stain for formalin fixed tissue". Am J. Clin. Path., Technical Section 10:184-185, 1946. If you have a copy of Humason's /Animal Tissue Techniques/ the method is there.
