We learned last year (the hard way) that chest freezers are more likely to survive a flood than are uprights, if that is any help! The compressors tend to be near the top of the unit in the chest freezers. I think the footprint may be the main deciding factor for many labs; we just bought an upright to replace one that the flood destroyed, only because we don't have space to put in a chest freezer with the same storage capacity.
