The problem in practice with filtering mechanisms like PREFIX, DEST, OWNER,
as well as the much more powerful FILTER command, is that the settings are
pervasive across displays and across sessions (saved in your profile).

I found years ago that nine times out of ten, I needed to look at an 'out
of the ordinary' selection mostly on occasion in response to some problem
investigation. Somebody would call me and say, 'Hey, I ran job AAABBBCC
five times and I can't figure out what's wrong'. Changing OWNER or whatever
to see these jobs was disruptive because when I was done, I had to reset my
selection criteria--assuming I could remember what they were before.

In response to a SHARE requirement, IBM implemented the Select command, a
temporary override of all other filtering criteria that can be used on any
job selection panel. In actual practice, you don't often need to look at
ALL of WWONKA's jobs; merely the one's he's have trouble with. S AAABB*,
for example, will display all the jobs matching the pattern. Select is not
saved. You don't have to reset your normal filtering criteria after Willie
is happy again. Once Select was implemented, even IBM developers admitted
that it helped them do their own job better.

And yes, I confess, it was my requirement.
