A rename will work if the backup was in "LOGICAL" format, but will fail if the backup is in "PHYSICAL" format.
A "PHYSICAL" format backup will be created if you use the "FULL" keyword. <snip> We perform Full Volume Backups Weekly on selective DASD volumes using both FDR and DFDSS.
