A performance monitor will keep track of that plus a lot more, plus
record what else was happening in the system when the usage started to
go up fast, etc. And it will be able to alert when numbers get high.

And for the shops that don't have someone to respond to an operator
alert anymore, it would not be very hard to route alerts through some
paging system (no pun intended).
